Nerves

We have a new instructor at the studio! She and I were talking about how her first classes have gone. She told me how nervous she is before each class. I get it. I’ve been there, too! In fact I still have nerves some times. I don’t think it’s a bad thing actually.

When I purchased the studio in 2021 and renamed it to Shine Pilates, I was nervous about how I would be received by the students. I knew I knew my Pilates and could teach an effective class but I also knew students become attached to the instructor or their style. Those nerves pushed me to do better and be my best. Those nerves kept me on my toes and made me work harder - not taking anything for granted. I would later find out the former owner had falsified her credentials and certification to everyone so maybe I could have had less nerves after all. I am actually glad I did not know that at the time - I might have felt less pressure to measure up!

Even today when I have a new student or new challenge, I can feel a bit of those nerves kick in. I know I have one shot at making someone a believer in Pilates and sharing the benefits. To me that is huge and so important. When I see someone who could really use what I am offering, I want to make sure they feel what they need to feel and understand the potential for their body with Pilates. Those nerves keep me motivated and striving to be better.

I believe if I ever lost all of those nerves it would be time to hang up my Pilates leggings! Without a bit on the line and a desire to be my best, I fear I could become complacent. This is one of the reasons I love working with all bodies - not just the healthy, fit ones. Each one represents a new challenge and a new chance to grow for me and the student.

A little bit of nerves I believe is very healthy. As a student, having a little bit of nerve before your first session is also very normal. The good news is I’ll be using my nerves to give you a safe effective first experience with Pilates so you can fall in love with it, too!
