Why You Aren't Seeing Results

You are coming to Pilates regularly and putting in the work. Maybe you also get up early and walk several mornings a week. You feel stronger but the weight isn’t falling off like you’d like. The scale hasn’t budged as much as you think it should.

The first question I’m going to ask you is “How is your diet?” Exercise is essential and certainly an important aspect of our health, weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. What we eat is also a big key to our success and health. You can not exercise yourself out of a bad diet unless you have a crazy high teenage metabolism and most of us just don’t anymore!

I had a prior client in another state who was wanting to lose weight. She’d put on some pounds during a rough patch in her life and was ready to loss weight. She came to Pilates and loved it. Soon she wanted to come every day. Then she asked if she could come twice a day. As a business owner - of course I want to be busy but I also realize this is not Okay! No one can maintain that level of exercise long term and we are better off having some rest days every so often. My responsibility to keep your healthy exceeds my need to make money! We had a chat and I told her I didn’t think it would be a good idea for her to return later that day for a second class. I could tell her body was already fatigued from the first workout that morning.

She told me “I eat really healthy - mostly salads.” I probed a bit more and she talked about the healthy salads she was making each day and vegetables she loved to eat. So far all seemed good but I kept probing. Then she shared that she loved Jelly Beans and would grab a handful throughout the day as a sweet treat and a reward. Red flag one for me! And she also said I generally have a few drinks every night - I need to drink enough to be able to sleep/pass out. Red flag number two! All the good work she was doing with Pilates and her salads was being negated by a daily diet of too much sugar and too much alcohol.

By eating sugar all day her body never got a chance to burn fat as it was so busy trying to use those sugar calories. The alcohol was also adding unneeded calories, depressing her system and taxing her liver. Again - no fat burning as her body struggled to deal with the alcohol.

This may be an extreme example but it is a true case I encountered. If you are not seeing the results you want, it may be time to do a deep dive into what you are eating. Maybe you truly are eating ‘healthy’ foods but some of those foods are causing inflammation in your body. When our body is inflamed we hold on to more water and we tend to become bloated and puffy. There are some ‘healthy’ foods out there that are anything but, too! So what do you do?
