Evolving

Those that know me through Surprise Pilates, have probably picked up on the fact that I like to eat healthy. I also like to cook and I share recipes I love in our Surprise Pilates Newsletter. Eating healthy is important to me.

What might surprise you is my version of a healthy diet when I was working full time in advertising and marketing about 15 years ago consisted mainly of Lean Cuisine, frozen vegetables, and a lot of canned soups. I rarely cooked and did not have a lot of confidence in the kitchen except when it came to baking. I grew up baking not cooking! It wasn’t until I quit my job and decided to open my own studio, that I decided it was time for me to really learn to cook. In the beginning it was stressful! I liked finding recipes and trying new things but the actual process brought on the fear it wouldn't turn out right! Over time I had more successes than failures and discovered some favorite recipes and learned some tricks along the way! Cooking started to become something I enjoyed.

Today, cooking is a way for me to relax and a little adventure. I look forward to it! I don’t worry if a recipe isn’t everything I wanted it to be because many of them are delicious. I get excited about what I am going to make next and finding good looking organic options. I also like trying to recreate what I have had in a restaurant or turning an unhealthy recipe into a healthier version. The past 15 years little by little I have evolved and my choices have improved. How I nourish my body has evolved. None of that happened overnight. It took time and I am still evolving. The more I learn - the more I adapt and change.

In 2020 I decided to go to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and get my certification as a Nutrition and Health Coach. This process taught me so much and I loved every bit of it. It’s safe to say -I evolved even more with the knowledge I was learning.

I share this today because as we are at the beginning of another year often we make goals to eat better or get healthier. I want you to realize it is okay to make changes over time and evolve. Deciding in one day to change everything often does not lead to success. If you want to start cooking - try just one new recipe a week. If you want to make better choices, choose one area to make a swap - eliminating snacks or replacing them with more nutritious options for example. The changes you make should be for a lifetime not a resolution and that takes time and an evolution!
