Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Happy Life!
Times are weird, it can be hard to handle it all. We are all living in an environment we haven’t been before; it’s hard to know proper etiquette or where to find guidance in a world with many different information sources. Between the unpredicted nature of the pandemic, combined with the need to return back to a somewhat normalcy, it can be hard to find a balance that keeps you feeling sane and healthy. As I talked about in a previous blog post, finding a routine is something that can really help you find stable ground in times that have possibly been more stressful than normal. In addition to routine, regular exercise (especially Pilates!) is another great tool that can benefit your mind and body. I’m sure we’ve all felt it; we aren’t feeling our best but letting off steam through working out helps more than we initially realize!
Pilates instructor and fitness blogger, Robin Long, said it best when she was explaining her relationship with Pilates and anxiety – “Through Pilates, I have found freedom”. Not only does Pilates encourage you to focus on your actions and not your stress, but it also allows your body to release tension as you stretch and strengthen your muscles. With Pilate’s focus on the breath, your brain has no choice but to slow down, calming yourself and decreasing anxiety. I remember my first Pilates class, I was surprised at how calming it was.
Pilates places you in the present moment. Focusing on your breathing, your actions, and not your fears or stressors creates a safe space for you to recharge in a meaningful way. This mindfulness allows you to move past these thoughts that can feel all-consuming. You are able to unlock a new level of mindfulness when you put this focus on the present moment.
There are a lot of great reasons to keep practicing Pilates, to improve your strength or flexibility, to work on balance and stabilization, and, of course, to keep yourself sane and stress-free during weird, unpredictable times. I know one of my favorite things about Pilates is how relaxing it can be. Next time you feel overwhelmed or anxious, try to take a step back and do some Pilates in your free time (or come visit us Shine for a class), recenter yourself on the present moment, and know that you’re more than your stress or anxiety!
